New York State Laws allow students to use topical sunscreen products in a school setting. Fire Island UFSD requires the student to obtain written permission from the parent / guardian for the application and use of sunscreen. The sunscreen product will be administered under the supervision of staff members and be stored in the Nurse's Office.

Likewise, the School Physician, James W Ferguson MD issued guidance regarding cough drops and throat lozenges in school. As with all other medication, students cannot self-carry. These products must be given to the bus driver or staff for appropriate administration.
Students may be administered these products under staff supervision if:
- They are not prescription medication
- They contain no alcohol
- Parent or Guardian provides written authorization for the product use in school
- They are supervised by staff, RN, etc., when in use but cannot be in use during bus transport, during Physical Education, or Recess.
For all other Over The Counter (OTC) medications or products, a note from a physician and written parent / guardian permission must to be provided.
Insect repellent is classified as a pesticide and will not be applied by school staff. If the student requires application, this must be done prior to school arrival or transport.
